Ampicillin and cloxacillin is a penicillin antibiotic combination often prescribed to provide an extended spectrum of efficacy, particularly against penicillin-resistant infections.

Ampicillin is a beta-lactam semisynthetic  antibiotic (part of the aminopenicillin family) derived from the basic penicillin nucleus, 6-aminopenicillanic acid.

Ampicillin acts as an irreversible inhibitor of the enzyme transpeptidase and inhibits the third, final stage of bacterial cell wall synthesis in binary fission, which ultimately leads to cell lysis.

Ampicillin is able to penetrate Gram-positive and some Gram-negative bacteria.

Cloxacillin is a semisynthetic derivative of penicillin that is resistant to breakdown by the enzyme penicillinase.

Cloxacillin has a broad spectrum of activity and is bactericidal against most strains of  β-lactamase-producing “Staphylococcus aureus”, due to its large R chain, which does not allow the beta-lactamases to bind.
