Streptomycin is a useful broad-spectrum aminoglycoside antibiotic derived from actinobacterium  “Streptomyces griseus”.

Streptomycin is a bactericidal antibiotic, the first of a class of drugs called aminoglycosides to be discovered, and it was the first antibiotic remedy for tuberculosis.

Streptomycin is a protein synthesis inhibitor. It binds to the small S12 rRNA of the 30S subunit of the bacterial ribosome, interfering with the binding off ormyl-methionyl-tRNA to the 30S subunit.

Streptomycin is not absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract but and therefore must be administered by deep intramuscular injections. After intramuscular administration, it diffuses readily into the extracellular component of most body tissues and it attains bactericidal concentrations, particularly in tuberculous cavities.

Streptomycin is an antibiotic that inhibits both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, and is therefore a useful broad-spectrum antibiotic.
